Well, hi there, Person! Marveen: I visited the Roanoke-Chowan website just a moment ago. Your recording of the Alyssa and William's baptism was absolutely beautiful. And to capture Alyssa as she is "dunked" in the hallowed waters of the Chowan River is a treasure for her to remember for always. (And as she and her brother grow spiritually, they'll appreciate it even more.) Thank you so much for sharing a special moment. "Take me to the water to be baptized . . ."

[Note: I once had an elder cousin, Otis "Redhorse" or "Junebug" Reid, who used to holla' "MarVEEN" to me. I still miss him.]

The picture at the top of the August homepage is captioned "Along the Suffolk Escarpment in the Chowan". I live at Sheep Landing and this beach area is about 50 yards from my home. I have never heard of the Suffolk Escarpment. Is this caption correct? I have enjoyed the Website very much.

The Suffolk Scarp (excuse me for writing “escarpment “), which runs along the western shore of the Chowan, is mentioned in a few local books, somewhere on www.poortown.com and the following website:

The Scarp runs up into Virginia were the Blackwater and Nottoway form the Chowan. What it does after that I'm not sure. But you'll note that the Chowan's eastern shore is flat and scarcely inhabited. I have ancestors that lived on both shores in centuries pasty. I only learned about the Scarp this year from THE POOR TOWN NEWS. - MTJ
