ENJOY YOUR WEB SITE...JUST FINISHED N.J.'S POETRY...REALLY DOES BRING BACK GREAT MEMORIES....

BORN AND RAISED IN A SMALL TOWN IN N.C. BUT HAD THE PLEASURE OF SPENDING EACH SUMMER AS A CHILD ON MY GRANDS' FARM IN GREENVILLE COUNTY..ON BRINK ROAD...WITH AUNT AND UNCLE ABOUT 3 MILES DOWN THE ROAD..AND WAS SUCH GREAT FUN TO WALK TO THEIR HOUSE WITH THE OTHER CHILDREN LUCKY ENOUGH TO SPEND SUMMERS ON THE FARMS.
AND, OH SO MANY, MANY YEARS AGO...

I FEEL PRIVILEGED TO HAVE THESE MEMORIES...AND FEEL SADNESS WHEN CHILDREN NOW WILL NEVER HAVE THE GREAT MEMORIES...AND THEY WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT THEY ARE MISSING....AND IN LATER YEARS MARRIED A FARMER AND NOW I SPEND TIME ON THE FARM...BUT NOT AS HAPPY SINCE HE PASSED AWAY....BUT IT WILL ALWAYS HOLD A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART.

THANKS ONCE AGAIN FOR THE GREAT STORIES AND POETRY.

Thanks so much for the memories, Marvin. I enjoyed seeing all those remedies that were so comforting and some not so comforting when I was a child. Your website is so enjoyable. I look forward to each new issue. As you know, I am one of your cousins that you admitted to having in Virginia in the Feb-March issue. As a child growing up in Cofield, NC, I used to think of Virginia as some far off place that you could go to, to get things that you couldn’t get in Hertford County. Now I live here, and I must admit Virginia has been good to me. Both of my daughters were born and raised here, except for the four years we lived in MS. (We love you, Mississippi!) My heart still belongs in NC, though because that is where I had a very happy childhood. I hope you continue entertaining us with your stories and pictures of the people, past and present, that are from this beautiful area of the world.

I just read over the latest www.roanoke-chowan.com It's fine, and the inclusion of the letter from that diva Shawnee Smith Ball was enough for me.

Howard Jones, Hyattsville MD

[Note: Shawnee Smith Ball – who used to hollar next to many a piano in Winton and Ahoskie, is a member of the Washington Opera Society Chorus. Carol and I have seen her on stage with Placido Domingo! Her mother and great-uncle ran Hertford County Undertakers' Union in Winton.]

I was brought to tears when I saw the pictures of Susan Robbins and others. It brought back such memories of my childhood days and of those who are no longer with us.

Thanks for all that you do!

My contact came about while doing research on my family tree and it branched back to the Nichols family through my greatgrandmother Mary Emeline Nichols Carney. Her father was Nial Nichols. Nial was descended from Wright Nichols and Levinia Dunning Nichols who lived in Bertie Co. All this led me to my cousin Barbara Nichols Mulder who lives in Conway. Barbara and I have become great e-mail friends and she has supplied me with much information about my Nichols family history. She introduced me to the Poor Town News and now the roanoke-chowan publication. I look fwd to every issue.

I have little to offer on my greatgrandmother, Mary Emeline Nichols Carner, other than she began her life in Bertie Co and ended it and is buried in Crittenden Co, KY. She was married to James Carner in Crittenden Co, KY, and although I have no proof, I suspect that he too hailed from Bertie. I do have certification of his service in the militia in Crittendon Co, KY.
