Hi Marvin, I love what you are doing. Let
me know if you hear anything in regards to the Bertie/Hertford county
school situation. My Bertie High School class of 86 has been chatting
back and forth about the state of the school system. We also enjoy reading
your publication.
Could you place and ad that the Bertie High School Class of 1986 are
in the planning stage for their 20th reunion and would like assistant

The Matthews family has long been a part of Hertford County. Most of
the Matthews came from David Benjimin Matthews & his son Slade B.
Matthews. David had other Children ,but we have'nt been able to come
up with connections yet. Slade was in the war between the states, captured
on Roanoke Island & pardened. He was married first to Amanda Langston
& three kids, Julia, George and John Henry. Later he married Rebecca
Adkins and had Manny, Antonette & James Addison ,my Grandfather.
who was also married twice. First to Rosa Lee Saunders & last to
Florence Jones , daughter of Thomas Melvin Jones, my Grandmother.
We are having a Matthews Reunion on June 17,at noon, in Rocky Mount
at the Saint Paul Methodist at 1216 Bethelim Rd. Cost is only $8.00
for a traditional southern dinner. E-mail to mattyfw@cs.com if you would
like to attend. Two years ago we had 87 attending.

Marvin,
I'm Warren Milteer, Jr. I think that Angenita
has forwarded some information from me to you. I have been keeping up
with your site. The photograph are very interesting to see and help
bring the stories to life.
I was wondering if you had any contact with or know of some of my relatives
in the area. If I understand correctly some of your folks lived close
to mine. My great grandmother was Sallie Greene Milteer, daughter of
Watson Greene and Sarah Elizabeth Nickens. I know you have run into
and taken a great number of pictures. I was wondering by chance do you
know of anyone who might have a picture of my great grandmother. She
died in the 1930s so there probably weren't too many pictures of her.
Thanks,
Warren Milteer, Jr.
-It's a delight to hear from you! My
grandfather, John Pat Jones, used to cut Watson
Greene's hair - the Greene family and the Jones group were neighbors.
Justine Greene is a regular at two of the Jones Reunions. I don't have
a source of where to find Sallie's picture, and many people in that
community were only starting to take their own photographs in the 1930's.
But I'll keep an eye open. Quincy Whitaker in my "BlueFoot
Philanthropist" story lived down the road from the Greene
home which I just saw this weekend while on a visit.
