REMEMBER, THEY ARE OUR 'POSSUMS!

A love poem

Love is a funny thing; Love is a blossom

If you want your finger bit, poke it at a 'possum

-folk rhyme from
Zora Neale Hurston

You know, whenever our woods animals are talked about, the rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, deer and bear are constantly mentioned. But the poor old 'possum is always forgotten and it is not fair. On top of that, a lot of you are flattening our 'possums on our Roanoke-Chowan highways. There's even a joke about it:

Question: Why did the chicken cross the road?
Answer: To show the 'possum it can be done.

Please be more mindful and spare our 'possums!
