Cofield

A poem by Lorenzo Jones

It was on Bi-Centennial Day, July 4, 1976, that Lorenzo Jones paid a visit to his cousin T.W.'s
store. In the background are the stores of the
Manley brothers' - James and John (the latter
later run by son Albert).

A Union Army map marks the location of Sally
Archer's Crossroads, now Cofield. Now,who was Sally Archer?

Cofield, a town in East Carolina
Just south of Virginia’s line;
Though you’re not known by kings as home;
I’m glad you’re known as mine.

A mile square town, my kind of town;
A town in the Old North State.
Along the Atlantic-Coast Line tracks;
We think that you’re first-rate.

Sally Archer’s Crossroads was your name
Many moons ago.
They’re not too many living now
Who remember that name though.

We loved you through these many years
As slowly you have grown;
And though we’ve traveled far away.
You’ll always be our home.

A town where neighbors always smiled
We remember with affection;
We’ll not forget your friendly ways
Your guidance and protection.
