THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH

They keep trying to move their borders in our direction. They take our lottery money and they remind us how we used to be part of their state. We can't live without each other although sometimes we'd rather. We need their jobs and shopping and they need our workforce and spending. (I could use some of their business and readership.) Some among us even married them, have some as children and have become Virginians but few of them ever become one of us.

I'm gonna admit this: I GOT COUSINS IN VIRGINIA! I know many of you have to say the same. We'll have to keep making our peace with each other even when its been said in Hampton Roads,

"The only good thing that ever came out of North Carolina was an empty Greyhound bus."

Having poured some vinegar in our peaceful waters, I'll ask you, "What do you think of Virginia and what do you think Virginians think of us?" Your comments are welcome at roanoke-chowan.com.
