T.W., Brenda Brown and horse Pat Brown with an
Easy Entry Road Cart made by Buckeye Cart in Ohio.

Ohhh, Wayne and Brenda Brown have a wonderful collection of horses, mules, carriages, buggies and carts. Jim Pearce of the Poor Town News (Brenda’s uncle) featured them in "Horses and Mules".

They, kindly, invited me to come over and see the paradise they’ve created, and I was treated to a cart ride with Wayne. The next day, they had me back and I brought my father, T.W. Jones, with me. Brenda insisted that Daddy sit with her while she drove her favorite horse, Pat Brown, and her road cart. T.W., who used to plow rows and race with his father’s horse, never thought he’d ride behind one again. See, you can still have fun at eighty-nine!

Brenda told me about the pink ribbon she won in a competition and the lessons she learned from it. She’s a quick study. I’m letting her tell you about it.

“The horse show was the weekend of the (June) 11th-12th and I started at 5th place - got (two) 4th places, then a third place in pleasure driving on Saturday and Sunday. I got 2nd in reinsmanship and a first place in the next pleasure driving class; which was the blue ribbon. It was our first blue ribbon ever.

All I could think about was the lady from Colerain, named Ms Fannie McCallum, who taught me how to drive a horse when I was 12-13 yrs old. She was almost retired when she got her pony and cart. She allowed me to drive all over the town of Colerain. Her grandchildren and I, we sang songs and laughed and had such a good time. This one is for you, Miss Fannie. Also, I couldn't have done it without Wayne who is my trainer, teacher, farrier, truck driver AND BEST FRIEND.

I only hope to do as well next time. It really is fun and I hope my granddaughter, Catie, will continue to carry on after I retire.“

Catie, I think you’ll have a fine teacher.
