| One of the first baptisms I ever saw
was at Phillipi Baptist in Cofield and it took place during Sunday School
following Revival Week. Among the deacons singing "Wade in the Water"
was one of my great-uncles (all of my great-uncles were the giants who ruled
the earth in my young days). Our pastor, who wore his robes and hip boots,
led the children to the church pool. I later learned the words to the song
but that day I could swear I heard the deacons chant:
"Wade in the water, Wade in the water, children Wade in the water; dad-gum young'ns in the water" Because I was baptized in the Chowan (Pleasant Plains Church '65 by Reverend Stanley P. Petteway) I'd like to know about any river baptisms that take place now. Perhaps you could invite me to yours.
Reverend A.M. Williams of Pleasant Plains Church with Edwina Hunter and Ava Louise Hall at Chowan Beach around 1960. |
